Hymn by Robert Patrick, 2014, acrylic on canvas tarpaulin
During the last several years, I have completed a series of large, acrylic on tarpaulin paintings depicting fantasy environments as metaphors for real environmental states of agitation. Panoramic ocean scenes populated with biomorphic symbols have been a recurring theme. Even as degrading conditions in the Earth’s seas are a cause of profound personal anxiety, I also strive to illustrate the wondrous vastness and power and biodiversity therein. It is also important, in a world growing hotter and more densely populated, to consider how interdependent ocean conditions are. And, how sea level rise, acidity, and pollution are the collective destiny of us all.
